UNDERSTANDING CONTAMINANT fate and transport processes in the vadose zone and implementing effective characterization and remediation approaches are recognized as some of the most challenging problems facing scientists and engineers dealing with the subsurface environment. The separate section entitled Contaminant Characterization, Transport, and Remediation in Complex Multiphase Systems in this issue of Vadose Zone Journal is dedicated to this topic. Motivation for the special section is derived from two sessions entitled "Characterization, Attenuation, and Remediation of Subsurface Contaminants in Heterogeneous Chemical or Physical Settings" at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Denver, CO (29–30 Oct. 2002).

The sessions included more than 30 presentations on this topic, from which we are fortunate to be able publish six papers in this issue. Three of the six papers are review papers. The special section begins with an interesting paper on DNAPL architecture based on data collected at several field sites. The next two papers discuss characterization of DNAPL contamination in the vadose zone. The third and fourth papers are related to surfactant behavior in multiphase systems. The final paper discusses issues related to metal transport and remediation.

We commend the authors for their hard work in completing these quality papers in a timely fashion and applaud the dozens of reviewers who worked on the different papers.
